Spooky Stuff

As I’ve mentioned before in this blog, I’m a very seasonal person.  Each season brings with it a wealth of weird traditions and emotions that I look forward to with great anticipation.  For me, the fall is all about the color of the leaves, the crisp air, the NFL, sweatshirts, German food, pumpkin everything, apples, and spooky stuff.

Last night I was in the spooky spirit, so I made some pork schnitzel with spaetzle and rented It from the Redbox.  I had just started watching the movie when a massive storm rolled in with rain, lighting, thunder, and the works!  My lights started flickering, and suddenly I was in complete darkness (save for the 200 lightning flashes that reportedly took place throughout the hour).  My power quickly came back on, however, and I finished It on what was essentially the best night for the spirit of things.

The lightning, and thunder, and power outage, and Pennywise the clown all got me to thinking about fear.  In the midst of the storm last night, I was more afraid of the insane amount of lightning outside than I was of the insane clown in the sewer.  With movies, fear seems to be something that you can easily turn off and on.  I can chose to let Pennywise into my psyche, or I can choose to laugh at his cheesiness.  Sadly, real life fear is a lot little harder to turn off.  It seeps into your brain and kind of just sticks there.

One thing I realized while watching It, however, is that I probably have more control over my real life fears than I think I do.  If I can learn to laugh at Pennywise the clown, I can learn to laugh at my own fears.  The truth is that fear only has as much reality as we let it.

With that said, I’m excited for fall and all the spooky stuff that comes with it!  I intend to embrace the fantastic fear of the season, and befriend my personal fear in the process!
